Murphy Auditorium Investigation Review 2-21-26

Murphy Auditorium sits in the heart of New Harmony, Indiana. This massive building has a presence you can feel from the street. Important events have happened here and a lot of lives have passed through its doors.

Built in 1913, it came to fruition as part of a dream from an immigrant. Edward Murphy came to New Harmony as an Irish orphan. He ran away from his abusive uncle and fled to New Harmony because he heard about the great things Robert Owen was doing.

Robert Owen was the founder of the second Utopian settlement, focusing on science, social reform and education. Through this, Edward was able to learn several trades and saved enough money to go to medical school. He never forgot his beginnings and gave back to the town that had given so much to him. Over the course of his life, he helped establish the new location for the Workingmen’s Institute library and museum. When he died, he left a large portion of his wealth for the town to build Murphy Auditorium.

For many decades, Murphy Auditorium was the hub for New Harmony, offering a place for people to go for entertainment and social events. Plays, musicals and public events were held there frequently. While the auditorium doesn’t host as many events as it once did, it is still the primary location for Under the Beams, a musical extravaganza, and private events.

Like any old building with a tremendous amount of history, this one retained the presence of many who passed through its doors. Over the decades, people report seeing shadowy shapes move on the stairs and in the audience, but none are more fascinating than the haunting in the basement.

We wanted to find out who haunts the building and communicate with them.

Many of our guests have attended an investigation with us before. For some of them, it was their first paranormal investigation.

As usual, we divided into groups and began our investigation.

Location Investigators (L-R) Joni, James and Traci

Lobby

James Taylor-Caudill led the dowsing rod session in the lobby.  If you don’t hear a response for a question, it’s because it wasn’t audible on the recorder. The heat kept kicking on which blurred out a lot of the audio during that time, but I did my best in trying to interpret it.

Session 1 – Blue Group

After a brief demonstration on the use of the dowsing rods, they got started.

Stage

Joni led the group on the stage using a spirit box app called the Ghost Tube Vox. We’ve been using it for several years now and have gotten some amazing results.

Session 1 – Orange Group

After introducing ourselves, we got started.

We began getting responses right out of the gate. Someone asked if they liked New Harmony, and a male voice said, “Young man.”

The next response came seconds later. When someone asked if anyone has asked their name, a voice told her, “You can’t.”

We could barely get a word out before they were answering us. A guest said, “You said you were a young man…” and he told her, “Sometimes.”

The next guest asked if he was a teenager. He told her, “Is there a reply back?” Then another voice answered him and said, “Probably.”

When it was my turn, they simply wouldn’t talk to me. I resorted to begging, telling them I’m a nice person and they told me, “She needs to go back.”

When asked if this was their favorite room, a male voice told us, “We’re shackled.”

After a few attempts, I finally got them to answer me. I asked what they missed most about being a living person. A male voice told me, “Just walking.”

There were times when we thought we heard something different than what was said. An example, we thought we heard the name Andrew, but it wasn’t what they said. Another time, we asked how many were here with us and we thought they said 36, but they didn’t. In both cases, it was just a jumble of sounds that kind of/sort of sounded like what we thought we heard.

As a medium, I could feel them swooping in all of a sudden. I commented on that and asked if anyone had any mediumistic abilities. We didn’t hear it at the time, but on my recorder, I hear a man say, “Hey!”

I asked if anyone else’s ears were ringing, because that’s my first indicator that a ghost is nearby. Several people did report ear ringing. The person to the left of me also heard it and said it was coming from a spot between us, which was exactly where I was also hearing it.

Someone was smelling perfume and I explained that it is a metaphysical gift. It’s called Clairalience when you smell phantom smells. “There you go. You are gifted,” I told her. A male voice told us, “Sad,” which isn’t far from the truth. Being gifted isn’t always fun.

We heard the word shackles and thought we heard something about crashing down (we didn’t, actually), so someone asked about it. A female voice said, “It’ll go wrong.” The last part of the word wrong was cut off, but I think that’s what she was trying to say.

I felt a lot of them coming in closer to the group and commented. One guest could also feel them. When I commented on it, a male told me, “Our place.”

We had a lull where they weren’t saying anything we could understand and then a voice came through. “He’s waiting,” it told us. We tried to find out who he was, but they wouldn’t tell us.

We heard some random words that didn’t make sense.  They said, “Amusing,” and something about “15.” Then we heard something that could have pertained to us. A woman commented, “They’re different.” Yes, indeed we are.

We had asked earlier if they drove a car but didn’t get an answer. Then, at the very end of the session, a man asked us, “What’s wrong with my car?” It made us all laugh.

Session 2 – Blue Group

We’d barely gotten started when we got the first response. While we were introducing ourselves, after Jerry said his name, a male voice said, “Hello, sir!” This will be important, because more things happened to Jerry during the rest of the session.

The session grew quiet with hardly any responses. “Please come and talk to us,” my friend, Cheryl, said. “You’re loud,” was the response.

Cheryl brought 8 year old Blake with her to the investigation. He asked, “Are you friends with Cheryl?” A male voice, the same one we’d been hearing all night, said, “Who’s that?”

We went a few rounds without getting anything understandable, so we started talking about what we were feeling. Several people felt male energy on the stage and in the audience, watching us. Cheryl admitted that since she walked on the stage, she had a splitting headache. A male voice told us, “That’s from him.”

At one point, I swear they were calling us names. You can listen for yourself and see if you hear what I think I hear.

Sarah asked if there was anywhere else in New Harmony they liked to go and we got a very odd response. “President Trump,” they said.

At that point, Rosemary told us she saw something move on the stage behind the curtains. Several other people admitted they too saw movement. This is interesting to me because during our first investigation there four years ago, Ashley, who is now our team psychic medium, attended as a guest and said the same thing. She told us she saw a man standing there watching us.

Not long afterward, we began hearing sounds behind us on the stage. It was like someone knocked on the wood. It happened several times, but didn’t repeat itself for further groups. Someone was definitely trying to get our attention.

When I asked them to make the noise again, a male voice told me, “Spread the word.”

I often ask validating questions to see if they’re really in the room with me. This time, I asked if they knew my dog’s name, something that has been answered before at other locations. I man said, “No. I don’t know.” It was such a direct answer, it stunned me.

One of our guests asked a question we all wondered about. “What’s keeping you here?” he asked. The response was, “Seizure.”

We continued asking questions, getting nothing recognizable, when all of a sudden several people saw a flash of light dart through the group. It darted through the middle of the group, disappearing at the edge of the curtains. A female voice clarified for us. “Was the light,” she said.

Then we got the response of the night. I asked who went by Miranda and a male voice said, “Hey Jerry.” Miranda’s husband, who was sitting beside her, is Jerry.

As we were in the process of closing the session, I said, “Well, I think our time is up.” A female voice agreed, “This is all,” she said.

Session 3 – Yellow Group

Just after we went around the group to identify ourselves a male voice made us a pretty spectacular offer. “Do you want ice cream?” he asked, making us all laugh.

Someone asked if they worked there or came there to watch shows. A female told him, “We don’t.”

Bekka asked, “What’s your name.” Almost immediately, a voice said, “Lucy.”

Bekka’s KII device went off, indicating a spike in the electromagnetic energy, which could signify ghostly interaction. Her husband, Jared, told her that hers went off. A male voice told them, “That’s typical.”

Someone asked if they could tell her more about Robert Owen. A voice said, “It’s okay.” She countered, “Just okay?” and got a response of, “Not good.”

A male guest who had just come upstairs from the basement session asked what’s in the boiler room. He found it creepy. A male voice told him, “It’s his.”

Someone asked if they were speaking to the man she communicated with in the men’s dressing room downstairs earlier during a pendulum session. He said, “I’m not.”

Shortly after that, a female voice asked, “What’s the matter with you?”

Several guests from the last group saw the curtains move behind me, so I asked who it was. “He was naughty,” a male voice told us, making us all laugh.

Bekka found a tiny feather on the stage. She asked who sent it to her, but didn’t really get an answer. She told them she was going to put it in her hair and got a response. “I love it,” a male voice told her.

One of our guests asked if there was something going on in the front row of the auditorium. A female voice told him, “A registry.”

One guest asked how many people were sitting in the front row . The same male voice told him, “Have a look.” The guest said, “I see about six of them. Am I wrong?” The male voice told him, “Eight.”

As we were nearing the end of the session, both Bekka and Jared saw a small flash of light move across the stage just like they saw in the previous group.

We got a few more responses, but they weren’t as clear upon review as we thought they were at the time. Overall, the ghosts were quite chatty with this group.

Session 4 – Pink Group

After we introduced ourselves and started asking questions, a male voice said, “Hi Rick.” Rick said hi and then the male voice said, “From the video.” It sounds like Rick isn’t telling us something.

We went around the group asking questions and weren’t really getting any clear responses. I began wondering if we had worn them out when we finally got a clear message. A guest asked how many of them were there and a male voice told her, “Be serious.”

When asked if they’ve seen a lot of shows here, a female voice told him, “Movies.”

I asked if they knew Robert Owen and a male voice said, “I think.”

We weren’t getting a lot of true responses, but as a medium, I can tell you we were surrounded by them. They were flooding in in large numbers.

A guest asked if Jackson was here and Rich. A voice said, “Rich.” Then another said, “used to be.”

We often ask the pie question because we usually get a response. We go around the room and tell everyone our favorite kind of pie. When one of the guests said chocolate, a male voice said, “Love it!”

When a guest asked if they had any pets, they said, “A turd.” Made us all laugh.

I asked why they hang around there and a female voice told me, “Good stuff.”

A guest asked what his name was and he told her, “Jackson.”

Basement

Traci led the group in the basement with the assistance of our team psychic medium, Ashley. During their sessions, they utilize the Estes Method. One participant wears a blindfold and noise-cancelling headphones connected directly to a spirit box, which scans rapidly through the radio stations. They relay the words while the others in the group ask questions. Because the listener cannot hear the questions being asked, it avoids bias. They only speak what they hear. Sometimes the answers line up with the questions in an eerie way.

During this session, we also offered break-out groups. Three people at a time went into the dressing rooms to do their own 10 minute investigations with a pendulum.

Traci always starts the session with Ashley as the listener.

Session 1 – Yellow & Pink Groups

Ashley started out the session to show the group how it can be done. As we explain to the groups, not everyone will be good at this. In fact, I can’t do it. I don’t hear anything beyond the broken words mixed in with the static. Others have amazing experiences..

Q: Hi, my name is Traci. We’re going to introduce ourselves.

Traci pulled Trey out of the session and put the Rachel in.

Q: If there’s anyone here besides Gus who would like to talk, you’re welcome to join us.

They went around the room and asked questions, but didn’t get any responses. Traci switched out listeners.

Q: Gus, we have a minute left.

A: That one.

Q: We’re listening.

A: Don’t open it.

Q: What do you want us to not open?

A: It’s over in four.

Ashley pulled Traci out of the session and they went to break.

Session 3 – Orange and Blue Groups

Traci explained the process and got Ashley going as a listener.

Q: We come as friends and are going to go around and introduce ourselves.

A: Hi!

Q: Can you tell us your name?

A: It’s Gus. You were talking to me earlier.

Q: Can you tell them what you did for work?

A: I do maintenance here.

Q: How long have you worked here?

Q: do you enjoy your job?

Q: Do you know Andrew?

A: I hang out here and make sure it runs well.

A: There’s a few of us down here.

A: Sounds like someone is running.

Q: Do you have family here, Gus?

A: I have places to get to.

Q: Is this the only building you  maintain?

A: I have to go up to the stage to make sure things are going well. Do you understand?

Q: How old are you?

A: come on. Somebody come talk to me.

Traci noted that Gus wanted someone to come into the ladies room to do a pendulum session.

Q: What’s keeping you here?

A: Isn’t the building beautiful?

Q: It is.

A: I’ve been here a long time.

Q: Are there other friends here too?

A: yeah.

Q: In here with us?

Q: How tall are you?

A: It’s me.  I’ve been watching you guys all night.

Q: We talked to Andrew and Elizabeth upstairs. Do you know them?

A: Can we go back to the earlier questions, Traci? About the pie?

Traci went around the group and everyone said their favorites.

A: I really like apple pie.

Q: I like chocolate cream.

A: Good choice.

Q: That’s a lot of pie. What do you think, Gus?

A: I really like pie.

Q: Did you have any pets?

A: yes

Q: was it a dog?

A: Crap!

Q: What happened?

A: I broke something.

Q: What did you break?

A: a light

A: I think I can fix it. I’ve been here a long time, Traci.

Q: Was Gus upstairs with us earlier?

A: Yeah.

Q: Was Gus fixing a chair earlier?

A: I think so.

Q: Do you have a favorite person in this room?

A: Nick.

Q: No. Don’t talk about him.

Traci noted that Nick was a ghost they were talking about the last session.

A: Nick worked here.

Q: Was he your buddy?

A: No.

Q: Can you see how many fingers I’m holding up?

A: Maybe.

Q: Can you tell me? Does anyone else work here besides you?

A: What?

Q: Do you have help or do you do it all by yourself?

A: I mostly do it by myself.

A: I stay down here and do most of the work.

Q: is there anything else you like to do as a hobby?

A: Sophia. I like her.

Q: Is she pretty?

A: yeah.

Q: Is she one of the actresses here?

A: She’s in that room.

A: Hey Traci! I was the one who threw something at Ashley.

Q: Can you tell me what it is?

A: I like her.

Traci explained that someone threw something near Ashley as she walked into the dressing room. When she looked, she found a small rose quartz heart.

Q: Were you flirting?

A: I threw it.

Q: She’s a married lady.

A: I did it because I can.

Q: I don’t blame you.

Q: We were told there were 15 people here. Is that right?

A: yeah.

Q: are there children here as well?

A: Sophie.

Traci pulled Ashley out of the session and put the Emily in as a listener.

Q: Gus, I heard you liked flirting with me. How does Sophie, your girlfriend feel about that?

Q: Can we get someone else besides Gus to talk to us?

A: NO!

Emily came out of the session on her own. She said she really didn’t hear anything. Blake, our eight year old guest, wanted to give it a try.

Q: Okay, Gus. We have a treat for you. You don’t normally get to talk to kids. Do you like kids?

Blake pulled himself out after a minute or so. He said  he hadn’t heard anything.

They ended the session and went to break.

Session 4 – same group

Cheryl was the first listener.

Q: We’re here for one last session. Can you talk through Cheryl?

Q: Gus, are you doing work tonight?

A: yes.

Q: Did you have a favorite show?

A: You think? (said aggressively)

Q: I’m just asking!

A: All day

Q: Have you watched the Olympics?

A: Again?

A: Hey! What are you doing?

Q: Just sitting here, listening.

A: Hey you. I know.

Q: What do you know?

Q: Did you ever drive a car or truck?

A: We did.

Q: Did you ever go swimming in the Wabash river?

A: Who, me?

Q: yes, you.

A: I see.

Cheryl brought herself out of the session, so they put the next person in.

Q: Did you see the Christmas play?

A: We’re out.

A: We’re good. A long time.

Q: Do you like these visits?

She pulled herself out and they put the next person in.

Q: Can you tell me if you’re a Democrat or a Republican?

Q; What do you think about the Harmony Way bridge being closed?

Q: Gus, can you go upstairs and say “Orange” really loud over Joni’s equipment? (Didn’t happen)

She didn’t get any responses, so they put the next person in as a listener.

Q: Is Andrew here?

A: What are you doing?

Q: Talking to you.

A: Hello. It’s okay.

Q: Who am I speaking to?

A: Talking

Q: Are we still talking to Gus?

A: You’re good.

Q: Do you like the ladies, Gus?

A: Do you cuss?

Q: On occasion. How about you?

Q: I don’t think this is Gus. Who are we talking to?

Q: Who made your favorite pie for you?

A: Don’t start!

Q: (Ashley) There was just a really big shadow near the bathroom. Is that you, Gus?

A: Were you there?

Q: I’ve been here all night.

A: I was.

Q: What’s your name?

A: It was okay.

Q: I’m glad it was okay. I just want to know who I’m talking to.

Q: Can you make the lights turn on on the equipment? (it did light up).

Q: Can you do it again? (it did)

Q: Can you make it light up to red?

A: Every day.

Q: You’re doing a good job.

A: Yes, please.

A: Gas prices.

Q: You wouldn’t believe what we pay for gas.

A: Are you ready for it?

Q: Are you going to do something big for us?

Q: Do you stay in this building or do you visit other places?

A: Everything. The process of.

Traci noted that the lights on the KII hadn’t lit up all night and they were flashing constantly.

A: One more time.

Q: Can you do it one more time. (He did)

A: Hello!

She pulled herself out of the session. Traci decided to finish up the session herself.

Q: Alright, Gus. Traci’s listening. Is there anything else you want to tell us?

A: We need to be alert for. They’re coming!

Q: Who’s coming?

A: Them

Q: Who’s them?

A: They’re friends.

Q: Are they coming to get us?

A: I don’t know.

Q: Do you have anything you’d like to tell us before we go?

A: He needs something. On the back. It’s weird.

Q: What’s weird?

A: Hang on! Something’s there. Remember? Where are you going? Not with me!

Q: No, we’re getting ready to go home, Gus.

A: There’s Paul.

Q: Who’s Paul?

A: Sophie. We’re all around here. Who is? On. Come on! We’re going to do it. Stay there!

Q: We’re waiting! Can you light it up to red?

A: That hat. Hey, look at it.

Q: Which hat?

A: no. What? Come on! Freak!

Q: I know.

A: Just a little bit.

Q: It’s okay. We’re all different

A: I got it. It’s outside.

Q: What’s outside?

A: I hear you. On the ground.

Q: What’s on the ground?

A: Walk. Get up! NOW! Go on! We’re done. We want friends.

Q: Okay. Well, I’m your friend.

A: Who’ve been here. Outside.

Q: We were all outside to come see you. What else can you tell us?

A: Go to bed! Please!

Q: Are you ready to go to bed?

A: Open the door. Go ahead.

Traci pulled herself out of the session, laughing. It was clear they really wanted the group to leave.

All in all, it was a great investigation. I’m not certain we learned anything pertinent about the ghosts who linger there, but we got many clear responses. Thank you to my team for making everything flow so smoothly. Thank you to Historic New Harmony for hosting us and to David Angel for supervising. Also, we wish to thank all of our wonderful guests for joining us.
